Refugees in Newport
Matt 25:35-36 & 40For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me ….
'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
NIV
Newport has a growing number of refugees and asylum seekers. Many of them are fleeing religious persecution, and imprisonment for simply confessing Christ as their saviour. Bethel Community church has many refugees as a part of our congregation, and actively welcomes people from around the world. All refugees face many challenges as displaced people settling into the UK; however the need for friendship, acceptance and welcome remain the most important. We seek to support refugees rebuild their lives in Newport in several different ways, and want to show the love of Jesus to refugees in our city.
The largest ethnic refugee group in Bethel come from Eritrea. They have fled severe religious persecution in their own country; we welcome them as a part of our church family. The Eritrean community meets weekly for worship in the GAP CENTRE every Saturday at 3pm.
We are a member of the Newport and District Refugee Support Group and work with other refugee organisations in Newport.
